The ultimate goal of anyone who loves to decorate their yard for Christmas is to set up a full light show that includes music. For some examples of these shows, head over to our videos section. Now that we’ve all seen the shows, and have been amazed at what some people are doing, we’re here to tell you that anyone can do it!
Here are some steps to get your started: Do your Research.
Before going any further, be aware that setting up a Christmas lightshow as part of your outside Christmas decorations take a lot of time and patience. It can be a great hobby, but it’s not as easy as plugging some lights in flipping a switch. So, if you are ready, keep reading…
What You Will Need:
1. A computer to do the programming.
2. A light controller with multiple channels. This is what controls the lights.
3. A software program to program the light controller. This will define when the lights turn on and off in relation to the music.
4. The lights! This should include not just regular lights, but icicle lights, net lights and yard displays.
| Organize and Plan.
Now you are getting down to the fun part. To make the show work, you will need to sit down with pencil and paper and design your system. Decide what music you want to play (preferable something Christmasy), and where the decorations will be. Your plan should include a drawing of your front yard, with sketches and notes on how the show will work.
Buy Your Equipment and Decorations
Now that you have your plan, you are ready to buy your decorations. This can get expensive fast, spend wisely and stick to your budget.
Test, Test, and Test!
It’s important enough to say again: Test, Test, and Test! The first thing you should do is set up your controller for a single set of lights and make sure you can get it to turn on and off. | Then get it to turn on and off to music. Then add a second set of lights and make sure you can get that one to turn on and off. See why this takes so long? It can be tedious, but the results are well worth it.
Set It All Up
After everything is programmed, it’s just a matter of setting it up. Hang the lights, set up the displays, plug it in, and enjoy your outside Christmas decorations!
Now, all you have left to do is sip hot cocoa and watch your neighbors scramble to get their decorations looking half as good as yours!
Good Luck!

Decorating for Christmas is one of the best parts of the holiday season. Here are some simple tips that will help anyone from a novice designer working on their first yard to old pros who have been decorating for years. A common question is when you should start decorating. This varies greatly by culture and region, even in the United States. The basic rule, though, is that you can decorate anytime after Thanksgiving. We always do it the second week of December, and I used to have neighbors who would do all of their decorating on Christmas Eve. Putting up outside Christmas decorations can take hours, or even an entire weekend. The best way to cut down on that time is to start with a good plan. Here are some tips: 1. Stand in your yard and decide how you want it to look. Visualize the display and how it will look at night.
2. Pick a theme. This can be something specific like having all Santa decorations, or something more abstract, such as several displays centered around a tree. 3. Think of colors. All white lights make the display look more elegant, but can get boring for large displays. Large, solid blue, green and red lights give a retro feel and make people think of their own childhoods. Current trends are leaning more towards neon colored led lights, which give a fresh and exciting look. 4. Pick a focal point. This can be an inflatable Santa, a nativity scene, or several lighted reindeer standing around a lit tree. This will give the display more purpose, and will make it much more visually appealing. 5. Choose a wreath. You will want to hang something on your door. This makes the home look inviting, and gives a little decoration during the day when the lights are off. 6. Once you decide on the basics, measure the areas where you will put lights so that you know how much to buy. You do not want to have to go back to the store to pick up another set of lights, only to find that the color you need has sold out! 7. Decide how you will hang your lights. If hanging from the roof, climb up and look at the edge of the roof before going to the store. Stores will have several types of hooks, and you want to be sure they will fit your roof before going to buy them. 8. Check your power. Where are your outlets, and do you have enough power cords to reach the strings of lights and displays? You should also make sure you have a timer that will automatically turn the lights on and off. A good rule of thumb is to keep them on from dusk until midnight. Once you have your plan together, then it’s just a matter of heading to the store, picking up your decorations, and setting them up. And do not forget, Christmas decorations are for Christmas, and should be taken down no later than one week after the New Year. By following the above tips, you should be able to create a great looking outside display that you will get to enjoy through the entire season. Merry Christmas! |

Living green is at the top of everyone’s list this year, and it’s something we are trying to do for our own outside Christmas decorations. To that end, we did a little research to determine what kinds of Christmas lights we should be buying, and the overwhelming result is LED Christmas lights. Here are some of the green benefits: 1. They use up to 90% less energy. That can turn into $10 saved in electric bills for every 300 hours of use. 2. They last much longer, over 4,000 hours. Regular bulbs burn out before 2,000 hours. 3. Energy Star Approved And here are a couple other benefits we found with the Christmas LEDs: 1. They are cool to the touch, and the risk of fire is greatly reduced. 2. Shatterproof, which is great when you have young ones helping you put them up. 3. Although the larger bulbs are dimmer than regular bulbs, the mini-bulbs are brighter. Since mini-bulbs are the trend, and just look better in general, this is great news. So, to keep in the ‘Green Christmas’ theme, we’re planning first to not buy any new decorations if we can help it…the best way to stay green is to reuse what you have. But if we do have to buy, we are definitely going with LEDs. Merry Christmas!, Ryan |

My wife and I decided last year that we were going to decorate for ourselves, and that the people on the street would come second. At the time, we lived in a house with a courtyard. The great part about that was the privacy...but this was bad for Christmas decorations, because our front yard was behind a 7 foot wall. So instead of decorating the outside, we decorated the inside of our courtyard. It was great because we could see all of the lights from our front windows. Having the lights inside of our yard also let us decorate for the kids. We took their playhouse and put lights both inside and outside of it, then we played in it with the lights on for the entire season. It was great! In the picture on the right, the Santa and Snowman are actually facing away from the street, and toward our windows. To the left, you can see the playhouse that we decorated. So don't be afraid to be go against the norm and decorate for yourself! |
